2027: Election Lessons Renew Focus on Electoral Integrity and Democratic Institutions

Nigeria’s democratic institutions are coming under renewed public scrutiny following the September 19 legislative by-elections and emerging discussions about what the country can learn from the conduct of elections ahead of the 2027 General Elections.

Recent analysis of the by-elections has highlighted issues including the deployment of election personnel and materials, BVAS performance, ballot secrecy, accessibility, voter intimidation and allegations of vote-buying. The discussion is increasingly focused not only on election-day procedures but also on the institutional systems that support credible elections.

At the same time, media stakeholders meeting in Kaduna have warned that AI-generated fake election results, deepfakes and manipulated audio could create new challenges for the 2027 elections. They called for stronger fact-checking, digital verification, media literacy and professional journalism to help citizens distinguish verified information from fabricated content.

The Independent National Electoral Commission has also reaffirmed its commitment to transparent, credible, inclusive and peaceful elections, while engaging with an African Union pre-election assessment mission on Nigeria’s electoral preparedness.

THE GOVERNANCE QUESTION

For IGGPS, the emerging conversation goes beyond political competition. It raises important governance questions:

  • How can electoral institutions strengthen public confidence?
  • How should emerging technologies such as AI be managed during elections?
  • What mechanisms can better protect the integrity of electoral information?
  • How can citizens participate meaningfully in democratic processes?
  • What institutional reforms can reduce disputes before, during and after elections?

INEC’s published 2027 timetable places the presidential and National Assembly elections in January 2027, with governorship and State Assembly elections scheduled for February 2027, making institutional preparation increasingly important.
