Nigeria’s preparations for the 2027 General Elections are increasingly focusing on electoral peace, institutional responsibility and citizens’ ability to participate without intimidation.
President Bola Tinubu has called on Nigeria’s 774 local government chairmen to discourage thuggery, intimidation, hate speech and electoral violence ahead of the 2027 elections. He also urged them to help create an environment where citizens can exercise their democratic rights freely.
The development comes as electoral stakeholders continue discussions on strengthening public confidence in the electoral process. Recent proposals have focused on improving transparency, access to reliable information, protection of voters and mechanisms for resolving disputes before they escalate.
Meanwhile, INEC has emphasised the importance of properly preserving and documenting electoral records, describing effective records management as important for institutional continuity and public trust ahead of the 2027 elections.
INEC’s official election calendar currently schedules the nationwide Presidential and National Assembly elections for 16 January 2027, followed by Governorship and State House of Assembly elections on 6 February 2027.
